The Minnesota governor was set to visit the Granite State this past Sunday, but he canceled at the last minute amid rumors that he was on a list of contenders for her running mate. The campaign confirmed those rumors were true in an official announcement Tuesday. NBC10 Boston spoke with voters in the swing state to get their reaction — and Walz isn’t exactly getting rave reviews.

“I was definitely disappointed that it wasn’t Pete Buttigieg because I think he is the man for the job and I think he will be president someday,” New Hampshire voter Rebecca Leedberg said. “I will support the Democratic party regardless, so I am supportive of Kamala and her pick.”

Leedberg used to work on the primary presidential campaign for now U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and was hopeful that he would run again this time around. On the other hand, Craig Brown worked for the Harris primary campaign that same year and couldn’t be happier to see her on the top of the ticket.

“I’m really excited for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” Brown said. “I think in her time as Vice President, she’s done a really great job of focusing on issues that matter.”

Meanwhile, neither Biden’s decision to drop out of the race, nor Walz as a running mate is doing much to sway Trump’s base.

“I think it’s a very poor pick because he’s far too liberal,” New Hampshire voter Dave Neises said. “I think Trump has many flaws but I think that he is actually in favor of improving the country and keeping it the country that it was as opposed to moving it towards Marxism.”

“I know he’s got a lot of faults,” New Hampshire business owner Robert Abrams said. “Things all boil down to policy and the policy of Trump worked.”

Political analyst Scott Spradling said Harris has been enjoying a boost in the polls over the last couple of weeks since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race. The big question, according to Spradling, is whether Harris leaves a lot of votes on the table among moderate, independent voters who tend to decide elections in November.

“She’s not going to win over a lot of Republican votes. Period,” Spradling said. “So the ownness is still going to be on the Vice President to come to New Hampshire and close the deal and sell the ticket, if you will.”

The standoff began around 3 p.m. at the state office complex on Pleasant Street, where administrative offices are located in several buildings.

Police were initially tight-lipped about what had occurred, initially saying only that the public should avoid the area due to an “active police incident within a building.” They later said a person was in custody and the situation was resolved.

Tuesday night, state police explained that an escaped inmate, identified as 33-year-old Tad Emerson, had been arrested after about five hours of negotiations.

Emerson, a minimum-security resident of a work program with the New Hampshire Department of Corrections, has been returned to the custody of prison officials.

Police say Emerson is facing charges of being a felon in possession of a deadly weapon and resisting arrest.

Emerson is expected to be arraigned at an unspecified date, police said. It was not immediately clear if he had an attorney.

Arrest made in 2023 hit-and-run boat crash on Lake Winnipesaukee

Anthony Clark, 41, was found in a back bedroom of a South Boston apartment on Logan Way early Friday morning, according to the U.S. Marshals, who were able to take him into custody after Clark didn’t initially surrender, though he was arrested without incident.

When Clark escaped early Sunday, he was due to face trial over domestic violence charges, including strangulation, simple assault, stalking and witness tampering, officials said. At Concord Hospital – Laconia, Clark was able to his ankle monitoring device off and escape the area, authorities say.

The ankle bracelet was found near the hospital by a concerned citizen about 10 p.m. Sunday, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for New Hampshire. Video footage showed him fleeing the hospital about 1 a.m. that morning, and a tamper alert was sent when he removed it, but it went undetected.

He’s due in federal court at noon Friday before being returned to the custody of Belknap County, Marshals said. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak to his escape and arrest.

Gordon Thomas Searles, 68, died Sunday, said attorney Joseph Fricano. He said he did not know the cause of death and that his client had been looking forward to his day in court.

“I hope everyone on both sides can be at peace,” he said.

Searles was one of 11 former state workers arrested after the state launched an unprecedented criminal investigation into the Sununu Youth Services Center 2019, though charges against one of the men were dropped earlier this year after he was found incompetent to stand trial.

Searles, who faced three charges of aggravated felonious sexual assault involving a teenage boy between October 1995 and July 1998, also was accused in dozens of lawsuits, most of which alleged physical assault. One lawsuit accused him of sitting on a teen’s back while another staffer raped him, beating the boy multiple times per week and frequently choking him unconscious.

More than 1,100 former residents have sued the state since 2020 alleging physical, sexual and emotional abuse spanning six decades. In the first case to go to trial, a jury awarded $38 million in May to David Meehan, who said he was beaten and raped hundreds of times. But the verdict remains in dispute as the state seeks to impose a $475,000 cap on damages.

The first criminal trial, which involves a man accused of sexually assaulting a teenage girl a dozen times at a pretrial facility in Concord, is set to begin Aug. 26.

Alexandra Eckersley, 27, was homeless at the time and living in a tent in Manchester, New Hampshire. A forensic psychologist testified earlier Wednesday that Eckersley was suffering from mental health and developmental issues diagnosed since childhood, as well as substance abuse disorder. She was not being treated for those conditions at the time. Her trial started July 25.

Prosecutors said her son was left alone for more than an hour as temperatures dipped to 15 degrees Fahrenheit and suffered respiratory distress and hypothermia.

Eckersley pleaded not guilty to charges of assault, reckless conduct, falsifying evidence and endangering the welfare of a child.

She said she started having stomach pains earlier that day and thought she was constipated, but didn’t feel any better after a man who was staying with her gave her ibuprofen and medicine for an upset stomach.

“It felt like a knife stabbing into my stomach,” Eckersley said of the pain.

She said didn’t know what labor pains felt like. When asked by her attorney, Kim Kossick, when she realized she had been pregnant she said, “when the baby came out of me.”

She said she didn’t look at her baby and asked the man to take his pulse because she didn’t know how. “He said there was no pulse,” Eckersley said.

She had been bleeding and said she and the man decided to call for help, but had no cellphone service. They started walking toward an ice arena. On their way, Alexandra Eckersley experienced afterbirth. She testified she thought she was having a second child.

The baby was left in the tent.

“Did it occur to you to pick him up and bring him with you?” Kossick asked.

“No,” Eckersley said.

“Why not?”

“Well, I thought he was dead.”

Eckersley told a 911 dispatcher that she had given birth to two children, and that one had lived for less than a minute, and the other died immediately, her lawyers said.

Prosecutor Alexander Gatzoulis said Eckersley intentionally led first responders to a different location, because she did not want to get into trouble and did not tell them at first that the baby had cried after she gave birth. She was the only one who could lead them to the baby because the man had left, he said.

“You did not tell them where the baby was,” he said.

“That is correct,” Eckersley said.

She also said “correct” when Gatzoulis said she didn’t tell the dispatcher or the first responders that the baby had cried, and that she said she would give an officer a call when the baby was found.

“Essentially what you were telling them is that they could stop searching and you would get back to them if you found the baby,” Gatzoulis said.

“It’s not what I meant by it, but potentially, that could be taken that way,” she said.

Eventually, Eckersley took them to the tent, where they found the baby, alive.

On redirect, Eckersley said she knew some of the statements she made to police at the time were wrong, but that she didn’t know that. She said she was afraid of the man she was staying with. He was arrested along with Eckersley and was sentenced last August to a year in jail after pleading guilty to a child endangerment charge.

Eckersley has been living full-time with her son and family in Massachusetts since earlier this year.

The Eckersley family released a statement shortly after she was arrested, saying they had no prior knowledge of her pregnancy and were in complete shock. The family said she has suffered from “severe mental illness her entire life” and that they did their very best to get her help and support.

Dennis Eckersley, who attended the trial this week, was drafted by Cleveland out of high school in 1972 and went on to pitch 24 seasons for Cleveland, Boston, Chicago, Oakland and St. Louis. He won the AL Cy Young and MVP awards in 1992 while playing for the Oakland Athletics. After his playing days, Eckersley retired in 2022 from broadcasting Boston Red Sox games.

Nadeau, who lost a bid for New Hampshire’s First District Congressional seat in 2004, is charged with theft by deception, forgery, multiple counts of falsifying physical evidence and financial exploitation of an elderly, disabled, or impaired adult, the New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella announced Wednesday.

The court affidavit alleges that Nadeau induced two loans totaling $281,500 from a former client who had recently suffered a traumatic brain injury under false pretenses, and then took efforts to conceal his misconduct from the New Hampshire Attorney Discipline Office by altering electronic file metadata and submitting false documents, according to the attorney general’s office.

Nadeau was disbarred in April by the New Hampshire Supreme Court’s Professional Conduct Committee.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 9 in Rockingham District Court in Portsmouth.

New Hampshire State Police say marine patrol officers responded to the incident around 6:42 a.m.

The Marine Patrol Unit determined that 76-year-old Thomas Mead, of Tilton, was operating a scull when he was struck by a pontoon boat that was operated by a 17-year-old boy, police said.

The teen was able to get Mead aboard his vessel and began resuscitation efforts, which were continued until fire rescue units arrived on scene, police added. Mead was taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police have not released the name of the pontoon boat operator, or said if any charges could be filed. Anyone with information that could assist investigators is asked to contact Marine Patrol Sgt. Joshua Dirth at 603-227-2115 or Joshua.E.Dirth@DOS.NH.GOV.

The crash remains under investigation.

Volunteers, friends and family searched the Rumney Marsh Reservation near the Saugus-Revere town line.

Harmony’s mother, Crystal Sorey, organized the search and says Harmony’s father, Adam Montgomery, drove through the area they searched Saturday with a U-Haul truck.

“There’s 23 miles that he went back and forth to from the Tobin Bridge all the way out to here,” she said. “I want to be able to tell her brother like, mommy found her. I just want to be able to tell them that I never gave up and I did what I could to bring her home.”

The search will continue Sunday.

Investigators believe Harmony was murdered in December 2019, though she wasn’t reported missing for nearly two years. During the trial, Kayla Montgomery testified that Harmony’s body was hidden in the trunk of a car, a cooler, a ceiling vent and a workplace freezer before Adam Montgomery disposed of it.

She also testified that Adam Montgomery repeatedly punched Harmony in the head because the girl had wet herself and that he drove away with Harmony’s remains in a rental truck in March 2020, and that he didn’t say where he was going.

Adam was found guilty in February of killing his 5-year-old daughter Harmony, and a judge sentenced him to 45 years to life for murder and added a minimum total of 11 more years — all to be served consecutively — for charges of falsifying evidence, tampering with a witness and second-degree assault.

Adam Montgomery has refused to say where Harmony’s remains are, but Sorey and authorities are hopeful that it will be found.

She was bleeding heavily and thought she had suffered a miscarriage, defense attorney Jordan Strand said during opening statements in the Manchester trial. A boyfriend who was with her said the baby did not have a pulse, Strand said.

“She was in a heightened emotional state, not thinking clearly, and suffering from symptoms of her bipolar disorder,” a condition she was diagnosed with as a child, Strand said.

Strand said the couple had no cellphone service to call for help and started walking toward an ice arena. On their way, Alexandra Eckersley experienced afterbirth, but thought she had a second child. She told a 911 dispatcher that she had given birth to two children, and that one had lived for less than a minute, and the other died immediately, Strand said.

She told the dispatcher and police where she lived and pointed to the area, which was across a bridge. But police ignored what she told them, Strand said. She also was afraid to return to the tent because her boyfriend, who had left when police arrived, told her he didn’t want anyone else there, Strand said.

The man arrested along with Alexandra Eckersley was sentenced last August to a year in jail after pleading guilty to a child endangerment charge and was expected to testify at her trial.

Prosecutor Alexander Gatzoulis said Eckersley intentionally led first responders to a different location, because she did not want to get into trouble.

“Nearly after an hour after she gave birth, she told them a new fact for the first time: The baby was crying when she gave birth,” Gatzoulis said. “This completely changed the landscape of the search and increased everyone’s urgency because now they were looking for a baby, and not a corpse.”

She eventually led police to the tent. The baby was found, cold, blue, covered in blood — but alive, Gatzoulis said.
He said that the defense may discuss Alexandra Eckersley’s mental illness, “but none of that negates her purposeful actions here by lying about where the baby was and leading the search party away from her child for well over an hour.”

She has been living full-time with her son and family in Massachusetts since earlier this year.

A spokesman for the Essex District Attorney said detectives from their office, Lynn police and New Hampshire State Police were conducting a search as part of a search for Leeanne Redden, last seen 11 years ago in Lynn, Massachusetts.

Authorities say Redden was last seen on April 15, 2013 — the day of the Boston Marathon bombings — in the area of Evans Lane.

“I hope that she’d be alive, but the realist in me says no,” said her sister, Amy Robinson. “I think she’s on the other side trying to let us know what happened, to try to find her, and bring her home for peace.”

She was 37 at the time she was last seen by her family, a day before the attacks in Boston.

“Essex County District Attorney Paul Tucker would like to thank the New Hampshire State Police and the New Hampshire Attorney General’s Office for their invaluable assistance,” the district attorney’s office said in a statement. “We recognize the losses suffered by families with missing loved ones and want them to know that they are not forgotten. Our office is committed to reexamining old cases and acting on any new leads.”

Police were searching a private property off Small Road on Ayers Pond. Numerous police vehicles were spotted at the scene. The DA’s office confirmed late Wednesday afternoon that no remains were found. The search is complete and investigators will not be returning to the property.

The district attorney’s office would not say what led investigators to the New Hampshire property, but family members say Redden’s boyfriend at the time of her disappearance once lived at the site.

That boyfriend has since died.

“We’re hopeful that more things will come from this and this is just the beginning, and hopefully, we can get some answers and some closure for our family and find out what happened to our sister,” said Robinson.

Redden’s family wonders if her struggle with addiction, along with the intense focus on the Boston marathon bombing investigation at the time of her disappearance, may have led to her case not getting enough attention.

Redden’s case remains unsolved. She is described as 5-foot-2, 105 pounds, with curly black hair and blue eyes. She has a tattoo of a cross with the words “Forgive Me Father” on her upper back, a sunflower tattoo on her lower back, and a tattoo of a cross on the middle finger of her left hand.

Demiko Fox, 22, was arrested without incident near Bow Junction in Bow, New Hampshire, just south of Concord, according to the Marshals. He’d been tracked to a temporary residence in the town by Kirkland police, who have been investigating the death of the 7-year-old girl who’d been in his care.

She was brought to a local hospital April 11 without a pulse but with what the Marshals said was obvious signs she’d been abused. Despite being stabilized at the hospital, she had acute brain trauma and died six days later at a Seattle trauma center.

The girl’s death was recently ruled a homicide, according to the Marshals.

A warrant for Fox’ arrest on a charge of second-degree murder was issued in King County, officials said. They noted he was a student-athlete at a college in the Bow, New Hampshire, area.

After his arrest, Fox was held without bail at Merrimack County Department of Corrections on a charge of fugitive from justice, ahead of his extradition to Washington State, the officials said.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Fox had an attorney who could speak to his arrest.

Arrest made in 2023 hit-and-run boat crash on Lake Winnipesaukee

State police said they received multiple reports around 6 a.m. Wednesday of a person who had been hit by a vehicle on I-293 north in Manchester. Troopers responded and found a man with life-threatening injuries. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment.

In an update Wednesday, police identified the man as 63-year-old Mark Robinson, of Auburn, and said he remains in critical condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates the man entered the travel portion of the highway for unknown reasons and was struck by a Ford E-350 SD work van, state police said. The driver of the van remained on the scene and is cooperating with police.

Lane closures impacted northbound traffic for about two hours. All lanes reopened by 8:20 a.m.

State police said in a press release Tuesday that they responded to a residential location in Danbury shortly after 10 p.m. Monday for a report of a shooting. Around that same time, Grafton and state police responded to a home in Grafton for a report of a person with a gunshot wound.

Preliminary investigation indicates that the shooting occurred in Danbury and the man who was shot then traveled to Grafton. He was taken to a medical facility for treatment of his injuries. No immediate update on his condition was released.

State police said all parties involved have been identified and there is no threat to the public.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact state police at 603-271-1162.

Armed man shot, killed by police outside of home in NH, authorities say

The people on the boat, which was sailing near Odiorne Point State Park, were thrown from the vessel by the force of the strike, according to the U.S. Coast Guard, but unhurt.

“Next thing we knew, he just popped up and landed on the transom of our boat,” said Greg Paquette, one of the fishermen on board. “No warning.”

“You’re basically trying to survive,” said the other fisherman, Ryland Kenney. “It’s something that happens so quickly.”

Sixteen-year-old Colin Yager and 19-year-old brother Wyatt were out for a morning of fishing and saw the whole thing. Colin said he was enjoying the moment, watching pogies fly out of the water, looking for stripers to catch and hoping to get a video of the whale breaching. They got much more.

“It was crazy,” Wyatt said. “We were just completely in shock. It was kind of instinct to just drop everything and make sure the guys were OK.”

Colin’s video shows the moment the whale hit the neighboring boat. Wyatt shouts in surprise then immediately starts turning their boat around to rescue the men in the water. The men were able to climb up into the boat, unhurt.

“They were kind of laughing about it. They were in shock but they were in good spirits. They weren’t completely freaked out,” Wyatt said.

“The water temperature was 55 degrees, so when I dropped in, it was really hard for me to catch my breath,” Kenney recalled. “I wasn’t scared at that point, it was the shock of the water.”

Kenney and Paquette had other friends out on the water, in a bigger boat, so the brothers dropped them off and continued on with their morning.

“I fish a lot, maybe like five times a week and I’ve never seen anything like that,” Colin said.

Colin said the whale didn’t seem agitated — just hungry.

“I thought it was just a crazy memorable experience, I’m just happy that everyone was alright so it’s not a terrible memory for anyone,” Colin said.

The Coast Guard said the whale appears to be unhurt.

The Center of Coastal Studies Marine Animal Hotline and NOAA were informed.

While following up on a mental health call at about 12:05 p.m. from the previous night, an officer received information about a man in a home on Olivia Lane threatening another occupant.

When officers arrived, an hours-long standoff ensued, the Attorney General’s Office said.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m., during an encounter with the armed man, six police officers shot him, authorities said.

“Life saving measures were attempted at the scene, but the male suffered lethal injuries and died,” said the Attorney General’s Office.

No other injuries were reported, the Attorney General’s Office said, adding that there’s no threat to the public.

The man’s name wasn’t immediately released.

The attorney general says the names of the officers will not be “disclosed until formal interviews take place.”

The shooting remains under investigation.

Arrest made in 2023 hit-and-run boat crash on Lake Winnipesaukee

The incident happened at about 3:40 p.m. Sunday on Pleasant Street, Nashua police said.

The 65-year-old victim suffered a severe laceration to the neck and substantial blood loss, according to police, who said he was then taken to the hospital, where he had surgery and is currently in stable condition.

Officers were able to identify Jason Del Vicario as the suspect through surveillance video and witness statements, police said.

Del Vicario was later found at an area shelter and was arrested, according to authorities.

After executing several search warrants for Del Vicario’s belongings, police say they found a box-cutter style knife.

The 31-year-old Del Vicario was charged with first degree assault, deadly weapon, a Class A felony.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned in court Monday morning. It’s unclear if he has an attorney who could speak to his charges.

State police say troopers were notified around 12:38 p.m. about the crash on Route 12 at River Rd. N and responded to find three vehicles and five occupants involved.

An investigation shows that a Toyota Sienna had been traveling northbound when it struck a Fiat Spider, which was stopped in the northbound lane while its driver waited for traffic to pass to turn left onto River Rd. N.

The impact from the crash sent the Fiat into the southbound lane, where it was struck again by a Ford F-350 traveling southbound, police say.

The Toyota driver, 46-year-old Kim Carrier, of Swanzey, and her child passenger were uninjured during the crash, according to police. However the Fiat driver and his passenger, both of Keene, were trapped in their vehicle, and firefighters had to use Jaws of Life to remove them.

Police say 67-year-old Peter Friedrichs, the Fiat driver, was taken by ambulance to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene with serious but non-life threatening injuries. His passenger, 73-year-old Irene Friedrichs, was flown by medical helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, as a precaution due to serious and unknown injuries.

The driver of the F-350, identified as 19-year-old Landon Lake, of Walpole, was not hurt during the crash.

Route 12 was closed for more than an hour, during which time drivers were told to anticipate delays and avoid the area if possible.

New Hampshire State Police say they responded to reports of a wrong-way driver on I-93 at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

An officer initially tried to stop the car in Concord, but the driver failed to stop and continued moving south. A tire deflation device was deployed and the driver continued driving south in the northbound lanes until eventually stopped north of I-393, according to authorities.

The driver, identified as 20-year-old Emily R. Lecuyer, of Brentwood, was arrested and charged with felony reckless conduct with a deadly weapon, driving under the influence and disobeying an officer, police say.

Lecuyer was released on personal recognizance. She is expected to appear at a later date in Concord District Court.

The bill passed by the Republican-led Legislature would require schools to designate all teams as either girls, boys or coed, with eligibility determined based on students’ birth certificates “or other evidence.” Supporters of the legislation said they wanted to protect girls from being injured by larger and stronger transgender athletes.

Sununu signed the bill Friday, saying in a statement it “ensures fairness and safety in women’s sports by maintaining integrity and competitive balance in athletic competitions.” It takes effect in 30 days.

Megan Tuttle, president of NEA-New Hampshire, a union representing public school employees, criticized Sununu.

“Public schools should be safe, welcoming environments for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity,” she said in a statement. “Shame on Governor Sununu for signing into law this legislation that excludes students from athletics, which can help foster a sense of belonging that is so critical for young people to thrive.”

Sununu also signed a bill Friday that would ban gender-affirming surgeries for transgender minors. That takes effect on Jan. 1, 2025. The care has been available in the United States for more than a decade and is endorsed by major medical associations.

“This bill focuses on protecting the health and safety of New Hampshire’s children and has earned bipartisan support,” Sununu wrote.

Sununu vetoed another measure that would have allowed public and private entities to differentiate on the basis of “biological sex” in multi-person bathrooms and locker rooms, athletic events and detention facilities. Sununu noted a law enacted in 2018, that banned discrimination in employment, public accommodations and housing based on gender identity. He said the challenge with the current bill “is that in some cases it seeks to solve problems that have not presented themselves in New Hampshire, and in doing so, invites unnecessary discord.”

State troopers responded shortly after 2 p.m. to Access Road, where the man was stuck under the vehicle.

The man, identified as 53-year-old William Miners III of Madison, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The truck rolled backward onto Miners, state police said. It is believed to have been an accident, but police did not say whether a driver was involved.

The incident happened just after midnight Thursday on Towhee Drive, Hudson police said, where officers found several doors to the home physically breeched.

Those inside the home at the time of the break-in had to barricade themselves inside an upstairs bedroom, police said.

When officers arrived, they found Lwaboshi Simwerayi, 26, inside an upstairs bedroom, according to police, who said he was confrontational.

Simwerayi had to be tased after refusing police orders and resisting arrest, authorities said.

The residents were found safe and without any injuries, police said, adding that they didn’t know the suspect.

Simwerayi, of Nashua, was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, according to authorities.

The 26-year-old Simwerayi was arrested and charged with burglary in a dwelling at night, two counts of resisting arrest, simple assault on a peace officer, loitering/prowling and disorderly conduct.

He’s scheduled to be arraigned Friday at Nashua District Court. It’s unclear if he has an attorney who could speak to his charges.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Wednesday, Northwood police said in a post on Facebook that due to “a contained police incident” in the area of Ridge Road and Route 4, they were asking residents to avoid the area and to shelter in place.

Route 4, also known as First New Hampshire Turnpike, is the main road through Northwood and contains numerous businesses. They said more details would be released once the situation was resolved.

About an hour later, police said that a suspect was in custody, but released no other information.

Residents said in the comments section that several area roads were closed as a result of the police activity, and some businesses were forced to close.

The NWS said the tornado touched down in Lyme around 7:30 p.m., traveling 1.8 miles. It rated EF-1 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, with a maximum estimated wind speed of 110 mph.

In an update released Thursday, the weather service said the tornado first touched down near Post Pond, downing numerous trees along the western shoreline. The tornado tracked almost due north and crossed Route 10, causing sporadic tree damage. Once it reached Whipple Hill Road, the tornado’s circulation became wider, snapping and uprooting hundreds of trees.

One garage was even picked up and moved about 15 feet, and trees fell onto the roof of a home. The tornado continued north from there and continued to strengthen, causing even greater damage to trees and homes.

Overall, about 500-1,000 trees were snapped or uprooted, and five homes were damaged.

Neither New Hampshire nor Vermont was under tornado warnings, as parts of Massachusetts were.

About half an hour later in Milford, New Hampshire, a microburst also caused damage.

A microburst also hit in Rupert, Vermont, near the state line with New York, around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service said, explaining that trees were snapped and uprooted in North Rupert.

Numerous reports of damage were reported in the state as the storms moved through, knocking down tree limbs and leaving thousands without power.

Two areas of concentrated damage occurred in Milford and Lyme, and the National Weather Service sent a survey team to those areas Wednesday to examine the damage and determine whether it was caused by a tornado or straight line winds.

Milford is in southern New Hampshire, while Lyme is located in the central part of the state, along the Vermont border.

Shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said its survey team confirmed straight line damage in Milford due to a microburst. They said they observed seven damaged homes, two destroyed vehicles and about 150 downed trees in all.

They still haven’t said whether the damage in Lyme was caused might have been caused by a microburst or tornado.

The Milford Fire Department said on Facebook that a “substantial weather event” hit the town around 8 p.m. Tuesday, damaging many trees, branches and power lines. They said there was signficant damage to homes, electrical poles, and some very large trees down in area roadways.

The Lyme Fire Department shared several photos of storm damage on their Facebook page, and said a portion of Whipple Hill Road was closed on Tuesday night due to multiple trees, wires and power poles down “from an unconfirmed Tornado that hit the area.”

They said no injuries were reported.

They also shared video of a possible funnel cloud or tornado shared by a local resident.

No tornado warning was issued for New Hampshire during Tuesday’s storms, though a tornado warning was issued for parts of central and western Massachusetts.

The Red Cross of Northern New England said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, that 29 of the building’s 36 unites were damaged or destroyed by the fire, leaving dozens of residents without a place to stay. They said they are working with the displaced residents “to meet their immediate needs and help with recovery planning.”

Brady Gut, a 31-year-old from Chichester, faces a charge of aggravated driving while intoxicated for the crash, which occurred on Hooksett Road about 7:38 p.m. The other driver, a 70-year-old Hooksett man, is expected to survive, Hooksett police said Tuesday.

Gut was on Dale Road, turning his Jeep left onto Hooksett Road, when he collided with the other driver’s car, headed south on Hooksett Road, police said.

Gut wasn’t injured, and was released on cash bail pending a hearing in Hooksett District Court next week, according to police. It wasn’t immediately clear if he had an attorney who could speak to his arrest.

Arrest made in 2023 hit-and-run boat crash on Lake Winnipesaukee

New Hampshire State Police responded around 7:15 a.m. to the hit-and-run crash on I-93 southbound in Londonderry. They found that an Acura ILX driven by 31-year-old Kyle Barka rear-ended a Volkswagen Tiguan.

Both vehicles pulled over, and the Tiguan’s driver got out to exchange information when police say Barka hit the person and drove off.

The victim suffered minor injuries, state police said.

Officers with the Manchester Police Department responded to Barka’s Manchester Street apartment shortly after 8:30 a.m. and found he had barricaded himself in his apartment.

Police say officers, including a SWAT team, negotiated with Barka for several hours trying to get him to surrender.

According to police, Barka hit a K-9 with a chair.

Shortly after noon, police say Barka tried to flee through a first-floor window. Police took him into custody with the help of the K-9.

Manchester police say Barka was arrested on an active warrant from state police on a felony second-degree assault charge for the Londonderry hit-and-run. In the city, he is facing charges of felony willful interference with police dogs and two misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, police said.

The Manchester Police Department said Barka would be turned over to state police, but that he will be arraigned at Manchester District Court at a later time for charges related to the standoff.

It was not immediately clear if Barka had an attorney.

State police ask anyone with information to call 603-223-4381.

New Hampshire State Police said they responded to a report of a crash on East Main Street at around 3:57 p.m.. Officers found that tractor-trailer had collided with a pickup truck when they arrived.

According to police, the vehicles caught fire after the crash.

The police investigation revealed the tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound when it crossed the line and struck the truck.

The driver of the pickup truck died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash, police say. The driver of the tractor was treated for minor injuries.

Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run in Manchester, NH

The crash took place on Route 106 just north of Staniels Road at around 6:37 p.m., New Hampshire State Police said Saturday. A Toyota 4Runner SUV and a Mazda 3 car had collided.

Investigators believe the car, driven by 36-year-old Philip Sparacio, was traveling south when it crossed the center line and collided head-on with the SUV, driven by 52-year-old Stacy Sargent.

Two occupants of the SUV were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Three occupants of the car were rushed to the hospital, two of them children with life-threatening injuries, police said.

At the hospital, one of the children, 8-year-old Aria Enciso, was pronounced dead, police said. No other details were provided on the second child who was critically injured.

Route 106 was shut down for several hours but has since reopened.

Authorities haven’t said why they believe Sparacio crossed into oncoming traffic, or if any charges will be filed.

Marine Patrol said in a news release that they were notified around 6:57 p.m. of the drowning in Crystal Lake, a natural pond near Bodwell Road and Corning Road in southern Manchester.

According to the agency, the victim, identified as Amin Taheri, was swimming when a witness noticed he disappeared.

Witnesses went into the water and found Taheri submerged, officials said. Life-saving measures were attempted, but Taheri was pronounced dead at Elliot Hospital.

The city’s website says there are no lifeguards on duty at Crystal Lake Beach, noting people should swim at their own risk. The gates are open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and it’s a popular place to swim, boat and fish.

Officials said Taheri’s death does not appear suspicious at this time. An investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Marine Patrol Supervisor William Dansereau at 603-293-2037.

Manchester police announced Friday night that Stanley Richardson, 59, of Candia, NH, had turned himself in after police located his vehicle last week and identified him as the driver.

Richardson is being charged with felony conduct after an accident — injury/death. He was held on preventative detention pending a court hearing, police said.

According to Manchester police, Richardson was driving an SUV at the intersection of Central and Union streets when he struck a 71-year-old man on a bicycle around 3:45 p.m. on July 3.

The victim suffered a serious head injury and was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries several days later, police said. He hasn’t been publicly identified.

Witnesses told police at the time that they had seen a black vehicle collide with the bicycle in the intersection. It was reported that the car looked to be a black Nissan Rogue with possible veteran’s plates. The vehicle did not stop, and continued to drive east on Central St., prompting a search for both the driver and SUV.

Anyone with information had been asked to call the Manchester Police Department.

It wasn’t immediately clear how police tracked down Richardson’s SUV. Further details were not shared.

The child has since been found and reunited with family, police said Friday afternoon, but Gracie Silver, 16, had not been found and there were concerns for her safety. She left the area of Cedar Street with her daughter about 2 p.m.

Silver has red hair and was last seen in a teal T-shirt, black leggings and glittering pink socks, according to police, who said they believed she’s on foot.

An investigation started four months ago by Exeter police and the Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce, according to police, who later executed a search warrant.

Brendan DuBois, 64, turned himself in to police on Wednesday, authorities said.

He’s being charged with six felony Class A complaints of possession of child pornography.

According to DuBois’ website, he’s a New York Times bestselling author of 29 novels, and has co-authored with James Patterson.

“We are deeply disturbed by the serious allegations against Brendan DuBois,” a spokesperson for Severn River Publishing said in a statement Thursday. “While we respect the legal process, we have decided to immediately suspend all promotion and sales of Mr. DuBois’ books. We believe these steps are necessary to uphold our values and maintain the trust of our readers, authors, and the publishing community.”

DuBois, of Exeter, is also a “Jeopardy!” game show champion, according to his website.

The 64-year-old DuBois is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at 10th Circuit Court in Brentwood, police said.

An 86-year-old man is recovering at the hospital after police say his neighbor attacked him outside of his Manchester home, threatening to kill him. Family members say his life was saved by the actions of his dog.

“He was throwing patio furniture, hitting with chairs, bricks, and rocks,”
Brittney Ardizzoni, the victim’s great-nice said.

Police said Donald Pierce, 55, surprised and then assaulted Ned Tarmey early Sunday morning when Tarmey let his dog out the back door of his house on Pine Avenue.

“There was man standing there and basically just said he was there to kill him,” Ardizzoni said.

Tarmey’s family said as Pierce attacked Tarmey the family dog, Kane, pounced on him, holding Pierce down until police got to the scene.

“He had no clothes on, so I’m guessing that whatever Kane did was, you know, probably not comfortable,” Ardizzoni said.

The attack appears random: Piece and Tarmey never met before Sunday. It leaves other neighbors, like Ron Clement uncomfortable.

 
“I don’t know why he went so whacky. I don’t know if it was drugs? If it was booze?” Clement said.

Police said before Pierce walked over, he had a fight with a woman.

He faces a slew of charges, including first degree assault, second degree assault-domestic violence, criminal threatening, criminal mischief, four counts of simple assault, criminal trespass, indecent exposure, misdemeanor criminal mischief, cruelty to animals and resisting arrest.

Tarmey is recovering at the hospital after leaving the ICU.

“He has a broken clavicle, broken arm, a brain bleed, fractures in his face, and in his eye,” Ardizzoni said.

His family said he doesn’t have a broken spirit, and Kane will be by his side as he begins rehab.

Pierce is being held pending a probable cause hearing scheduled for July 16.

Manchester police said they received a report of a domestic incident on Pine Avenue around 1 a.m. Sunday. Arriving officers said they heard someone yelling for help in the rear of a local residence and located two men. One of them was lying on a porch covered in blood and the other was standing next to him, completely naked.

The naked man started yelling at police, making threats and even charging at officers. One officer deployed a Taser multiple times in an effort to subdue the man, and police said they were ultimately able to take him into custody.

Police said they later learned that the man, 55-year-old Donald Pierce, of Manchester, had been involved in a physical altercation with a woman at a nearby home. Afterward, he encountered an 86-year-old man who was letting his dog out and began assaulting the man, hitting him with his fists and a chair. The dog was also injured.

The elderly man was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive. Police said Pierce and the victim did not know each other.

The woman who had been in an altercation with Pierce previously was checked out by EMTs but did not require hospitalization.

Pierce was charged with first degree assault, second degree assault-domestic violence, criminal threatening, criminal mischief, four counts of simple assault, criminal trespass, indecent exposure, misdemeanor criminal mischief, cruelty to animals and resisting arrest. He is being held in preventative detention pending a probable cause hearing on July 16.

The New Hampshire National Guard confirmed his death in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon, saying “The New Hampshire National Guard and the State of New Hampshire suffered a tragic loss of one of its finest airmen and leaders.”

“Gen. Pogorek was an exemplary wingman, mentor and friend to many,” New Hampshire Adjutant Gen. David Mikolaities said. “He served his State and Nation with the utmost professionalism and dedication. He will be deeply missed.”

“On behalf of the entire State of New Hampshire, I extend my sincere condolences to the family of Gen. Pogorek. Gen. Pogorek served his state, country, and community with honor. His commitment and contributions to the Granite State will never be forgotten,” added Gov. Chris Sununu.

As the assistant adjutant general for the New Hampshire Air National Guard, Pogorek was responsible for the command, operations and combat readiness of over 1,300 officers, airmen and civilians at Peae AIr National Guard Base in Newington. He is survived by his wife, Whitney, and their five children.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time,” Mikolaities said.

Rochester police said they responded to Crown Point Road at 5:22 p.m. Monday for a report of a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Their preliminary investigation showed that a 2014 Toyota Tundra pulling a trailer was stopped on the side of the road as its driver attempted to resecure a load on his trailer when a red Toyota RAV4 headed west on Crown Point Road struck the pedestrian and continued without stopping.

The driver of the Tundra, identified by police as Pogorek, suffered life-threatening injuries and died at the scene. A juvenile passenger in the Tundra was uninjured.

Police said they were ultimately able to locate the RAV4, which they said was driven by 81-year-old Paul Clement, of Rochester.

The crash remains under investigation, according to police, and no charges have been filed at this time. Anyone with information that could assist police is asked to call Detective Matthew Flathers at 603-330-7128.

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services said on Thursday it detected high concentrations of cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, at Carry and Brewster beaches in Wolfeboro and at 19-Mile Bay and Tuftonboro Neck in Tuftonboro the previous day.

Visitors should avoid contact with the water and keep pets away, the department advised in a statement.

The cyanobacteria blooms are occurring as green clouds of material accumulating along shorelines. In some areas, they appear more yellow because they are mixed in with dense pollen, the department said.

Arrest made in 2023 hit-and-run boat crash on Lake Winnipesaukee

Manchester police are looking for what may be a black Nissan Rogue SUV with veteran’s plates as they investigate the crash that took place Wednesday about 3:45 p.m. on Central Street near Union Street.

Police last week that the crash, involving a man on a bicycle, left a 71-year-old with a head injury. The man was rushed to a local hospital; it wasn’t immediately clear when he died, and he hasn’t been publicly identified.

Witnesses told investigators they saw a black vehicle hit a bicycle at an intersection and continued on along Central Street, police said.

Anyone with information about the incident was urged to call the Manchester Police Traffic Unit at 603-668-8711, police said, sharing images of a black SUV.

Newsom shook hands with travelers stopping at the Hooksett rest stop and addressed whether he believes Biden will be the Democratic nominee come November.

“I believe that absolutely,” he said. “I believe that. That’s not something for me to control.”

Newsom also campaigned with Biden in Pennsylvania over the weekend, offering a forceful defense of the embattled president while sidestepping talk about whether he could be a potential replacement should Biden decide to step aside.

The governor has been quick to turn away that talk.

“It’s intentional,” Newsom said Monday. “I know how these guys work.”

Analysts and strategists say, at a minimum, this moment serves as a trial run for Newsom.

“This is a tire-kicking exercise to be able to explore what it will be like a couple years from now,” said political analyst Scott Spradling.

“This is performance art for him, but he can do that in a way that also supports Joe Biden,” said Democratic strategist Arnie Arnesen.

Nearly two weeks removed from Biden’s lackluster debate performance, Democrats are continuing to wrestle with whether the president can carry the party to victory this fall.

“He should take a moment to make the best informed judgement,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-California.

“I think Joe Biden can beat Donald Trump in November. I think a lot of Democrats can beat Donald Trump in November,” said Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-Massachusetts.

Newsom dodged questions over the weekend about those potential outcomes, including a question about whether he would support Vice President Kamala Harris for the nomination if Biden leaves the race.

“I don’t even like playing in the hypotheticals, because last night was about sort of locking down any doubt or ambiguity,” he said, referring to Biden’s session with Democratic governors. “And then we start running in different directions, zigging and zagging and all that kind of speculation. And that gets in the way of progress.”

He acknowledged “a tough few weeks” during his remarks to picnic attendees, and he admitted he had to scrap his planned talking points when facing reporters in Atlanta after the debate. But he said Biden reassured him and other Democratic governors Wednesday at the White House, where the president acknowledged his flop but expressed determination to win his rematch with Trump.

More than 200 people have RSVP’d for Monday’s “Blue Summer Campaign Kick-Off,” hosted by New Hampshire House and Senate Democrats.

“Democratic candidates and supporters from across New Hampshire will come together to celebrate the great success Democrats have had this year, and look forward to even more victories this fall,” said an email announcement for the event.

Four more Democrats in Congress called on Biden to step aside during a phone call on Sunday, but Biden defended his place at the top of the Democratic ticket Monday in a surprise interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Biden said. “I absolutely believe that I am the best candidate to beat Donald Trump in 2024.”

“I’m getting so frustrated by the elites in the party” calling on him to step down, he added. “I don’t care what the millionaires think.”

Daniel Mercado, 24, of Nashua, was arrested Friday on two counts of criminal threatening, one count of false reports (explosives/bomb threats), one count of disobeying an officer and one count of reckless driving.

Nashua police said they received a report on Wednesday that Mercado was posting threats on social media saying he was going to kill Nashua police officers by shooting them, hitting them with his vehicle and throwing explosives at them while driving around in his car.

Police said they located Mercado and his car and tried to stop him, but he fled, leading police on a pursuit into Massachusetts where he was taken into custody.

At this point, police said they learned that Mercado had also made claims that he had placed timed explosives in Nashua and neighboring Merrimack set to go off on the Fourth of July. Nashua police detectives investigated and were able to confirm that the statements he had made about the explosives were not true.

Mercado was held on preventative detention and was scheduled to be arraigned Monday afternoon in Nashua District Court.
