After a day of fishing on the Massachusetts island, Noah Karberg was headed home when his wife called him, asking him to run to Stop & Shop to pick up groceries.

“I was in a fishing shirt and board shorts, so no pockets,” he said Tuesday. “I put my phone and my wallet in the tray on top of the shopping cart. I do my shopping, and buy my groceries, come out to my truck, load most of my groceries onto the tailgate. I take a last couple of bags around to the backseat, come back around to the shopping cart, and there is a gull sitting on the cart, and right in front of me, grabs my wallet, flies off!”

Any good fisherman has stories, but Karberg’s is backed up by cellphone video.

“It was like a gull with an agenda,” he said. “Tossed the cash and went straight for my Amex.”

The video shows the seagull on top of a nearby carwash, picking through his wallet.

“I was thinking, ‘Oh my gosh, this is unreal, I gotta get my wallet back,'” Karberg said. “Started chasing the gull across the parking lot like a crazy person, knowing I looked like an idiot, but I really wanted my wallet back.”

The gull had the gall to fly off though with Karberg’s wallet in its mouth.

Since Sunday, Karberg, who is the airport manager at Nantucket Memorial Airport, has been hearing from people. He has not yet been reunited though with his wallet.

“I have had a lot of people reach out to me, say they were sorry for me, but it was really funny,” he said with a laugh. “It has all been in good fun. The island has a pace in the summer. It can be frantic, people can get burned out, and I think this was a little bit of good fun that everyone had.”

More wind turbine debris washes up on Nantucket https://www.necn.com/news/local/nantucket-sees-another-wind-turbine-failure-as-blade-breaks-off/3294935/ 3294935 post 9699021 NBC10 Boston https://media.necn.com/2024/07/Vineyard-wind-debris.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 CORRECTION (July 30, 2024, 9:58 a.m.): An earlier version of this story misstated the cause of the new debris washing up on Nantucket. A second wind turbine blade has not broken.

More debris has washed up on beaches in Nantucket, Massachusetts, after a wind turbine blade broke.

Nantucket town leaders and residents are frustrated amid the latest effort to keep beaches free from turbine blade debris. The public is being urged not to touch any debris.

The town released this information on Monday:

This afternoon, GE Vernova informed Town Administration that several sections of the turbine blade detached from the hub. Some large pieces entered the water column, while smaller pieces floated on the surface. Additional debris landed on the turbine platform.

According to GE Vernova, this detachment was not unexpected, though it has been several days since any debris detachment was last observed. The U.S. Coast Guard continues to enforce a 500-meter safety exclusion zone around the turbine. In an ongoing effort to identify and collect debris from the damaged blade, GE Vernova and Vineyard Wind have dispatched maritime crews to secure as much debris as possible for immediate containment and removal.

GE Vernova and Resolve Marine are working on a plan to safely and controlled remove the remaining portions of the blade. This plan is currently in development.

The town said Tuesday that popcorn-sized pieces of foam debris were expected to continue washing up on Nantucket’s southern beaches Wednesday and Thursday.

Anyone who finds wind turbine debris should call the Vineyard Wind’s reporting hotline at 833-609-5768.

Vineyard Wind heading to federal court amid Nantucket turbine crisis https://www.necn.com/news/local/nantucket-wind-turbine-crisis/3290769/ 3290769 post 9723273 https://media.necn.com/2024/07/Nantucket.png?fit=300,169&quality=85&strip=all As the cleanup and investigation continue into the Vineyard Wind incident earlier this month, and the project remains shut down, a “manufacturing deviation” is being blamed for a blade breaking off one of the turbines and sending debris onto Nantucket beaches.

“Some of the adhesives that are supposed to work for the blade did not do their job,” said GE Verona chief sustainability officer Roger Martella. “And what we also found with the manufacturing deviation is that the inspection which should have caught this did not.”

At a Nantucket Select Board meeting Wednesday evening, the chair said they intend to renegotiate their Good Neighbor Agreement with Vineyard Wind and expect 100% transparency from manufacturer GE Verona going forward.

Nantucket Select Board Chair Brooke Mohr said that “Vineyard Wind must implement comprehensive measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future, and it is imperative that full restitution is provided for the damage caused.”

Coincidentally, Vineyard Wind is back in a federal appeals courtroom Thursday, fighting a motion to toss its permit, based on allegations that regulators failed to conduct any safety, engineering, or structural integrity reviews of the wind turbines, or fully consider its negative impact on the fishing industry in that area.

While the appeal is unrelated to the recent incident, Nantucket officials will no doubt be watching it closely to see what impact it may have on their situation.

“We are also demanding answers and better coordination from our state and federal partners who have regulatory responsibilities to keep Nantucket Island and our ecosystem safe from such incidents in the future,” said Mohr.

A GE representative said they are in the process of inspecting all turbines.

More debris from broken wind turbine found on Nantucket https://www.necn.com/news/local/nantucket-wind-turbine-update/3287730/ 3287730 post 9699021 NBC10 Boston https://media.necn.com/2024/07/Vineyard-wind-debris.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 More debris from the broken wind turbine was found on Nantucket over the weekend.

Vineyard Wind, a joint venture of Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, says it received a report on Sunday that debris from the damaged wind turbine blade was washed up near Madequecham Valley Road, south of Nantucket Memorial Airport.

Beach crews were “immediately dispatched” to that location along with a helicopter, the company said in a statement Sunday.

“Vineyard Wind personnel on the beach are monitoring for debris to assist in maintaining safe conditions for beachgoers and swimmers,” the company said. “Vineyard Wind is focused on assisting in the recovery of debris caused by GE Vernova’s damaged wind blade.”

The turbine was damaged more than a week ago, and since then, more than six truckloads of fiber glass debris have been removed from the shore.

Operations at the first offshore installation to provide clean power to Massachusetts were “shut down until further notice” by the federal government as investigators look into what caused the breakage in one of the project’s massive, 107-meter blades.

Anyone who finds wind turbine debris should call the Vineyard Wind’s reporting hotline at 833-609-5768.

Vineyard Wind has 10 operational turbines delivering about 136 megawatts of power to the regional grid. Project overseers eventually plan to scale up to 62 turbines providing 806 megawatts.

Truckloads of wind blade debris recovered along Nantucket  https://www.necn.com/news/local/truckloads-of-wind-blade-debris-recovered-along-nantucket/3284241/ 3284241 post 2154153 https://media.necn.com/2019/09/WindTurbines072512.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Fiberglass and foam debris that could fill six trucks has been recovered so far on and around Nantucket as work continues to collect the fragments of a wind blade that was mysteriously damaged on Saturday night.

The offshore wind developer Vineyard Wind said Wednesday that 17 cubic yards of debris has been removed from the island’s southern shoreline along with several larger pieces that washed ashore. The power installation was also completely shut down on Saturday night, the company revealed Wednesday.

“Cleanup efforts will continue Wednesday and throughout the week as necessary until all debris is removed,” the company said. Vineyard Wind will also increase its beach patrols on island to 35 employees and contractors, up from the eight people deployed Tuesday.

The cleanup crews have been coordinating with the Nantucket Police, Nantucket Land Bank, and Nantucket Harbormaster, and Vineyard Wind indicated Wednesday they are observing less material washing ashore and the local police have reopened the beaches to swimming.

“We’re making progress in the debris recovery efforts and mobilizing even more resources on the island to hasten the cleanup as quickly as possible,” Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus Moeller said in a statement. “We continue to ask that members of the public avoid handling any of the debris, but report any debris sightings to Vineyard Wind or town officials for recovery. The public can have confidence that we will be here as long as it takes to get the job done and make sure the beaches are cleaned up.”

Operations at the first offshore installation to provide clean power to Massachusetts were “shut down until further notice” by the federal government as investigators look into what caused the breakage in one of the project’s massive, 107-meter blades.

On Wednesday morning, a Vineyard Wind spokesman said that project officials “immediately upon identification of the damage to the GE Vernova blade on Saturday evening … implemented a complete stop on power production for Vineyard Wind 1, and the wind farm has ceased power production since that time.”

Ten turbines were operational before the sudden halt, generating 136 megawatts of electricity. Project officials plan to ramp that up to 62 turbines offering a combined 806 megawatts once the project is complete.

Vineyard Wind disclosed the blade breakage publicly on Monday afternoon. On Wednesday, Vineyard Wind also said that the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement’s work suspension order, which made it into the news on Tuesday, was issued Monday afternoon.

Company officials plan to provide an in-person update at a Nantucket Select Board meeting that begins at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Vineyard Wind hired construction firm Robert B. Our and emergency response contractor National Resource Corporation to lead cleanup efforts. The company said it also plans to deploy shorebird monitors Wednesday “to conduct visual monitoring for state listed and protected avian species,” who will escort any vehicles working to remove debris near affected bird nests.

Nantucket short-term rental debate will continue after town meeting vote https://www.necn.com/news/politics/nantucket-short-term-rental-debate-will-continue-after-town-meeting-vote/3230238/ 3230238 post 9523446 Nantucket Government TV https://media.necn.com/2024/05/Nantucket-Government-TV-050824.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 As Nantucket ramps up for its busiest time of the year, there is uncertainty about where everyone who visits will stay.

Residents of the Massachusetts island voted at the annual town meeting Tuesday to oppose a measure that, according to The Boston Globe, would have broadly legalized short-term rentals.

The failure of Article 59 means the debate will continue over the legality of rentals from companies like Airbnb and Vrbo.

“There is just a lot of uncertainty and fear, and I think the local population is divided on this,” said Kathy Baird, who supports short-term rentals on Nantucket. “There is really no other place for people to stay when they visit Nantucket. It is a tourist destination, there are between 800 and 900 hotel rooms.”

Residents voted last May against a proposal that would have prohibited short-term rentals in residential zones unless the owner either lives in the home for at least six months per year or uses long-term rentals more than short-term rentals.

In March, a court ruled Nantucket’s zoning laws, as they stood, did not allow short-term rentals as the main purpose of the property.

“I feel that if this passes, it is a gun to my head, because I live in a residential neighborhood and I don’t want and I don’t want it to become filled with commercial short-term rentals,” one person said at Tuesday’s meeting.

Town officials told the crowd Tuesday that the results of the vote should not impact summer rentals. Still, there remains uncertainty.

“People are canceling their reservations for the summer because they don’t know if it is an illegal operation or not,” said Baird. “Who knows what is going to happen? Nobody does.”

Another measure, Article 60, passed Tuesday night. It mostly bans corporate ownership of short-term rentals.

Another town meeting is set for mid-September.

“We are sending you this message because it is essential that you know — students, parents, and Nantucket community members — that we do not condone nor will we tolerate any racial slurs or racist behavior from anyone in our school community,” Nantucket Public Schools wrote in a letter to the school community.

The picture circulated on social media and was shared with other students, officials said.

While the photo was taken outside of school hours, the district said it was investigating and have started talking to students and parents.

“We are looking into the details, as it is having a large impact on our student body,” the district wrote. “We will be monitoring the health and well-being of our students as our investigation continues and expect there will be reparations that are suitable to the damage caused to our school community.”

Nantucket Public Schools said it was considering a student forum to allow students to process the incident and talk about what can be done in the future to prevent “incidents of racial discrimination within our schools and beyond.”

It’s unclear if the students will be disciplined. The district’s statement didn’t say what school the students attended.

Video captured by a webcam belonging to Fisher Real Estate captured the moment when a white Chevrolet Silverado drove straight into fountain, and then kept driving over the rubble.

The Current reported that the crash happened at around 10:30 p.m. The fountain is at the corner with Union Street.

The truck was tracked down to a parking lot behind a laundry business on Vesper Lane, the Current reported, which also said that a person was apparently taken into custody there. The media outlet reported that a man was arrested at that scene and charged with drunk driving and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, citing police logs.

Michael K. Holdgate, 55, of Nantucket, faced a judge for an arraignment on Monday morning, according to the Current.

The monument is a former drinking fountain that was donated to Nantucket in 1885, and later repurposed and dedicated to a lieutenant killed in the Spanish-American War who lived on the island named Max Wagner, according to the Nantucket Historical Association. These days, it’s filled with flowers and greens.

Someone else hit the fountain and knocked it over back in March of 2020, the Current reported. The fountain was repaired by a company in Rowley, Massachusetts, and returned to its spot the next year.

NBC10 Boston has contacted the Nantucket Police Department to learn more about Sunday night’s crash.

Will Hurricane Lee hit New England? Tropical storm warning issued for Cape, Islands https://www.necn.com/weather/stories-weather/will-hurricane-lee-hit-massachusetts-powerful-storm-expected-to-impact-cape-cod-maine/3048617/ 3048617 post 8908501 https://media.necn.com/2023/09/leeimpacts.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Hurricane Lee leads our weather headlines, despite the fact that we are finally enjoying a sunny and calm afternoon after a toll of rainy days and severe weather.

A tropical storm warning was issued Thursday morning for Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.

hurricane watch is in effect from Stonington, Maine, to the Canadian border, where hurricane conditions, heavy rainfall and coastal flooding are possible Friday night and Saturday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Areas from Rhode Island to Maine — including Block Island — are under a tropical storm watch. A storm surge watch has also been issued for Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket, with the potential for life-threatening flooding there late Friday and Saturday.

When will Hurricane Lee hit?

Lee weakens to a Category 1 on Thursday before we see it knocking on our door with high wind gusts along the Cape and Islands on Friday afternoon into Saturday morning.

Where is Hurricane Lee headed?

The biggest impacts will be along the Cape, with dangerous surf, life-threatening rip currents, coastal erosion, coastal flooding and high, pounding waves. The winds may impact the outer Cape and Islands, with numerous power outages and heavy rain.

Meanwhile in our inland areas, breezy showers will take place Saturday morning into Saturday night. Just one day.

We’ll have to go through one day of wind and rain from Lee before a high pressure system takes over Sunday and brightens our skies. Out at the coast, though, communities may still be recuperating after coastal flooding, power outages and tree damage.

Hurricane Lee’s Maine coastal impact

Rainfall amounts in coastal Maine may range from 2-4 inches by Saturday night. Flooding impacts will be highest for Maine, but the outer Cape could experience heavy rain Saturday morning into the early afternoon.

As it nears landfall, most likely in western Nova Scotia through New Brunswick, Lee will weaken to a tropical storm, and the winds will lose strength. Still, coastal flooding might impact Maine, along with life-threatening rip currents and high surf.

Next week offers more sunshine, aside from Monday, with temperatures mostly in the 70s.

Judge Rejects Lawsuit by Nantucket Residents to Block Wind Turbines https://www.necn.com/news/national-international/judge-rejects-lawsuit-by-nantucket-residents-to-block-wind-turbines-protect-right-whales/2982641/ 2982641 post 6563169 Steve Helber/AP https://media.necn.com/2021/10/AP20181626985105.jpeg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,200 A federal judge has rejected a lawsuit brought by Nantucket residents who argued that the planned construction of dozens of wind turbines off the affluent resort island threatens the survival of endangered Northern Atlantic right whales.

Nantucket Residents Against Turbines said Vineyard Wind’s proposed project of some 62 turbines in waters 14 miles south of the island is in a crucial area for foraging and nursing for the dwindling species, which researchers estimate to number about 340.

In a ruling issued Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani found the group failed to show that either the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management or the National Marine Fisheries Service violated the Endangered Species Act or the National Environmental Policy Act in issuing a 2021 biological opinion or final environmental impact statement for the wind energy project.

Vineyard Wind CEO Klaus Moeller welcomed the decision.

“We’re pleased the court has acknowledged the rigorous and thorough administrative review that our project underwent over the last many years,” Moeller said in a statement. “We remain committed to working with all stakeholders so that we can continue to set the highest possible standards on this first in the nation project.”

The 800-megawatt Vineyard Wind project is on track to be the first commercial-scale offshore wind farm in the U.S., with plans to eventually create enough electricity to power 400,000 homes.

Vallorie Oliver, a Nantucket resident and one of the plaintiffs in the case, said the group is considering possible options.

“Nantucket Residents Against Turbines is obviously disappointed in the ruling,” she said. “We will be taking a few days to weigh our options going forward.”

The American Clean Power Association also applauded the decision, saying it shows “the environmental review process for offshore wind projects is rigorous and effective at ensuring that these projects are built in an environmentally responsible manner.”

The visibility of the towering structures — which could rise up to 850 feet above sea level and eclipse Boston’s 790-foot Hancock Tower — is also among the group’s concerns.

Vineyard Wind comes years after the proposed Cape Wind project, which failed after bitter litigation from another group that included Nantucket property owners.

Nantucket Residents to Vote on Major Regulation to Short-Term Rentals https://www.necn.com/news/local/nantucket-residents-to-vote-on-major-regulation-to-short-term-rentals/2975862/ 2975862 post 8159084 NBC10 Boston https://media.necn.com/2023/05/Nantucket-050523.jpg?quality=85&strip=all&fit=300,169 Residents of Nantucket will vote Saturday on an issue that has divided the island: Restrictions on short-term rentals.

Homeowners at the vacation destination rent out their homes each summer to thousands of tourists, but a new proposal could restrict how long they can be rented.

“If you live in a residential neighborhood and would like to short-term rent your home, you’re absolutely able to, but the home needs to be used more as a residence than as a short-term rental,” said Emmy Kilvert, a sponsor of Article 60.

The proposal would prohibit short-term rentals in residential zones unless the owner lives in the home for six months or more every year, or if long-term rentals are used more than short-term.

“Even the commercial interest could change their business model, and you know, have a winter rental to fulfill that and continue doing the short-term in the summer,” Kilvert argued.

But some say that’s not doable.

Alison Taylor says she’ll first lose her tenants, and then her non-winterized cottage, which she shares with her siblings in the summer.

“We couldn’t command enough rent to pay all the expenses and the taxes,” Taylor said. “Nobody on our street is an investor, we’re all families, just like us, trying to hold onto our houses.”

According to a study by the UMass Donahue Institute, only 5% of short-term rentals, as they exist now, could operate without any changes.

“If you agree that Article 60 means a property needs to be occupied by an owner or a tenant for six months or more of the year, then very few existing short-term rentals on Nantucket are compliant,” said Rod Motamedi, assistant director of economic policy and research at the Donahue Institute.

With nearly two thirds of all houses being second or vacation homes, the impacts could vary greatly.

“I understand why this is a difficult question for the people of Nantucket,” Motamedi said.

“I hope that they look around the room and see their neighbors and their friends, and realize that they could be pulling the land right out from under their feet,” Taylor said.

A short-term rental workgroup has formed to study the situation and is set to present findings this fall. Some town officials want the vote to wait until that data is in, but the vote is scheduled for Saturday.

Nantucket police and the Cape and Islands District Attorney’s Office are investigating the discovery of the human remains, prosecutors said Wednesday.

More details about the bone weren’t immediately available, including whether the person it belonged to is believed to have been killed.

Dr. Tim Lepore, who works as Nantucket’s medical examiner, told the Nantucket Current he examined the bone and found it had two implants.
